Lips are more susceptible to drying out because they do not contain oil glands like other parts of the skin. The problem can be worsened by lack of moisture, which can be due to weather conditions or lack of self-care. Taking care of your lips can be very easy with a few simple ingredients you’ll find around your home.

Step 1: Exfoliate

At one point or another, we have all had to deal with chapped lips. While there are numerous causes of chapped lips, starting from seasonal factors to dehydration, we can a simple exfoliator like this, to help get rid of the dryness and help our lips retain the moisture they need. A lip scrub will require two different components, an exfoliant to help remove the dead skin and then a nourishing agent which will make it easier for the exfoliator to be applied on the skin. Once you get rid of the dry patches, your lips will be able to better absorb and retain moisture and begin to improve.

Here is a very quick and simple lip scrub recipe for you to try out at home: mix in 1 tablespoon of raw honey with 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and then add in a few drops of coconut oil. Apply the scrub to your lips and rub it well in circular motions for two to three minutes. Wash with lukewarm water and apply some lip balm.

The honey will help to reduce the dark spots on your lips, and the sugar granules will get rid of the chapped skin and help make your lips smoother than before. Additionally, the coconut oil will work as an emollient to soften the lips!

Step 2: Hydrate

After exfoliation, the next step is to hydrate the lips. You can do this with a soothing lip mask that you can easily make at home using only two ingredients, yogurt and honey. Mix a little bit of honey and yogurt in a clean bowl, using a fork or spoon. Both of these ingredients have moisturizing properties. Apply the mask onto your lips and leave it on for 5 minutes. It might be good to lay down or sit in a chair tilting your head back to avoid the mask from running down your lips. Then just rinse the mask off and pat your lips dry. Make sure to lock the moisture in with a lip balm of your choice after you’re done with the lip mask.

Other than these natural remedies, you can maintain a few other habits which will help take care of your lip. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration which can cause dry lips. Remove all traces of makeup from your lips before you sleep because your lips need to be able to breathe by being clear. You can also massage your lips with some nourishing oils for a few minutes every day, to improve the blood circulation in your lips. We hope these tips and tricks will help you maintain a happy and healthy smile!
